Is it time yet to give up on this sad mantra that hockey is "our game" and "we're the best at it"? You knew trouble was brewing when we struggled against that hockey-power, Switzerland. Hopefully, the experts are right and the extra game against Germany will help us gel.

Hey Admin this is for you and all the haters out there. FU. WE are still the hockey power of the world. The problem we have is loyalty to our players. We have a few guys in there late 30’s early 40’s. These guys should never of been on the team. That is the main proplem an last night just proved it. Bouwneester, Phaneuf, Mason IN. Brodeur, Pronger, Niedermayer Out. Keep it young and hungry.

US went with a young squad and look how hungry they were last night...I agree with EBIND...

I simply posed the question. Perhaps we will still win. I hope we do, but to assume that because it's "our game", that we're the best at it is folly. I also hope that if we lose, instead of a laundry list of excuses, someone important has the courage to stand up and say, "Hey, guess what Canada? We're not necessarily 'the best', anymore!"
And our "young and hungry" juniors also lost. This team (any team) needs a good mix. The average age of the goal scorers on the US team last night was something like 33.

Young and hungry???????
Canada outshot the Americans almost double......... How can you say they werent hungry?
I think the problem isnt taking younger players.......
I think it should be Amatuers who go to the Olympics not the pro's. Its a waste......
When Canada plays America it just reminds me of the East v the West games...... Good talent. But remember all these players play against each other every other night and in there own way dont like each other.

Ya, it would be nice to see just amateurs back at the Olympics for all sports, but it's just so hard to make a policy that fits and worx for all. There's likely some 22 year old getting paid to play "pro" hockey in Italy right now and if he were over here, he wouldn't make a varsity squad. Is it fair to exclude him?
But the "hungry" aspect definitely is there for the amateurs. A medal at the Olympics is their grandest prize. Not so with the pros who are in the Olympics.

putting amateurs in Olympic hockey would significantly drop ratings for the games... and how does it remind you of an East vs West game? tell me an allstar game where players put their bodies on the line to block every shot? its about pride!
Secondly, I think Canada greatly outplayed the US, but it came down to goaltending. Ryan Miller showed why is arguably one of the top 3 goalies in the NHL. Brodeur did too many fancy tricks with the puck, and thought he could knock everything away with his stick. That is why I hope Luongo starts the next game.
That being said, I think we will make it past Germany... but then we have Russia to go against.. That is where we will really find what Canada is made of.

WE are still the hockey power of the world.
Canada won 6 of the first 7 winter olympic gold medals in hockey from 1920 - 1952. Only losing to BRITAIN in 1936!! I wonder how many Scots were on that team? ;)
If we were still the hockey power of the world since 1952, we'd be sitting first in the overall standings as of NOW! If we were, then we would have more than 1 gold medal in the last 14 winter olympics. We also have 2 silvers and 2 bronze but Russia has SEVEN golds in the last 14! Are we still the hockey power of the world going by modern staticstics of the last 50 years!?!?!
This tournament is up for grabs for any of the big five! (Canada, US, Sweden, Russia, Czech) I'd even throw Finland and Slovakia in there as they have insane goaltending (Kipprusof/Halak) and good hockey teams.
It is good to be proud of your nation, cheer them on, fight with them!!! But no way are we the hockey power of the world, and statistically, never have been at the Olympics barring the first 7 games where if Britain was winning, it's clear nobody gave two hoots about hockey at that time.
All the same, Go Canada Go! Get Brodeur out of net, Luongo in, and Pronger/Niedermayer back to the NHL where they are currently being WAY overpayed! Just go with the five young lads at the back, they'll get it done. The wake up call is in and the team needs to bring this home! Regardless of our medals in other events this truly (and sadly, not taking away from other olympians) is the big one for our country! Like Ebind said, we believe we are the hockey power of the world, but history doesn't lie nor do the results from the last junior tournament. :o
Regardless of the let downs of our lugers, skeleton competitors or skaters who are disqualified for delays, or skiers who when they crash make the bones in my body ache watching them - this will be the biggest let down because it is in our back yard and our belief that hockey is our trade.Come on Sidney!! Take it by the reigns brother, bring it home!!

James "Jimmy" Foster (September 13, 1905 - January 4, 1969) was a Scottish-born Canadian goaltender. Born in Glasgow, Foster emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1912. He is best known for his role in leading Great Britain to its only Olympic gold medal in ice hockey.
